Character information
Character's Name: Eridan Ampora
Series: MS Paint Adventures (Homestuck)
Age: approximately 13
Timeline: During the time spent in the Veil, prior to this comic. (Quick summary being that he starts a duel with Sollux, which leads to him killing Kanaya and Feferi, after 'teleporting' to the computer room from another room. The specific point would be that he steps onto the teleporter pad to go to the computer room, and instead of arriving there, he wakes in Carriero.)

-Also of note is the quadrant system of relationships. To summarise: there are four aspects to romance. They are symbolised using the four card suits (hearts, spades, diamonds, and clubs). Hearts (<3) represent matespritship; this is basically the same as the traditional human idea of love and one of the two quadrants focused on reproduction. It is known as the flushed quadrant. Spades (<3<) represent kismesissitude; this is where you hate someone so much that they are your ultimate rival. You live to show them up, but you wouldn't dare kill them because then they no longer would be your rival. Also, this is the other reproductive quadrant; think about the trope of hate!sex and apply it here. It is known as the caliginous quadrant. Diamonds (<>) represent moirallegiance. The closest human analogue is close friendship, but it's more than that. It's considered to be a predestined relationship between two complementary souls. Typically this is between two opposing personalities, by which they balance each other out. Most commonly moirail pairs are composed of one highly aggressive and strong troll, and a more passive and weaker troll. The latter calms the former, and the former protects the latter. It is known as the pale quadrant. Clubs (c3<) represent auspisticeship. The entire point of auspisticing is to prevent infidelity in kismesissitude. Considering trolls are an aggressive race, hate comes pretty easily. Thus, the auspistice mediates between two other trolls to prevent a kismesissitude from developing. This is typically because either one of the auspisticees already has a kismesis, or the auspistice does not believe a kismesissitude between the auspisticees is in anyone's best interests. It is known as the ashen quadrant. (And I only mention this because quadrant-filling is a big factor in Eridan's personality.)

-Finally, troll biology and culture. The main thing to note here is the haemospectrum. It goes from red all the way up to Tyrian purple. Reds are the lowest and most common of bloods, while there are only two trolls known with Tyrian blood. Eridan's blood colour is right below Tyrian on the spectrum, penultimate on the scale. This makes him royalty in troll culture.

Personality: Eridan is best described as a bit of a tool. And by a bit of a tool we mean he is whingy, melodramatic, classist, racist, genocidal, and positively reeks of desperation. Let's break that down a bit.

We'll start with all the -isms he exhibits, as well as the genocide. Note how, as mentioned in the canon resource section, we have mentioned that the troll race is divided based off of the haemospectrum -in other words, blood colour- and whether one lives on land or sea. Primarily, he's quite racist, as even at roughly 13 he has been working on plans to kill all the land dwelling trolls. His hatred is such that he even claims to live above water to better keep an eye on land dwellers and plot against them (though, given he is the one explaining this motive, it is possible he is lying to try to appear 'better' in the eyes of the person he is talking to). The only land dwelling troll he has specifically mentioned in canon that he would not kill is Kanaya, most likely because based on their few interactions with each other (as well as Kanaya's interactions with others) it can be inferred that Kanaya is very tolerant of his personality.

The entire reason he hates land dwellers? The amount of trash they produce. I am not even making this up. (Though, based on what we know of troll culture, one could extrapolate that this is partially the result of internalised beliefs of superiority due to blood colour and physical traits. Thus, not only are land trolls inherently inferior, they are deliberately spitting in the face of their betters by polluting the living environment of the royal blooded trolls: the oceans.)

Now, moving back to whingy and also forward to desperate. He is inordinately focused with filling his quadrants, particularly after his moirail, Feferi, breaks up with him. He has a tendency to flirt with everyone, regardless of actual interest or chances of compatibility, and disregard being told that his advances are not welcome... to a certain extent. He lacks the temperament to ever force himself on another, but that doesn't stop him from being annoyingly persistent with his flirting, even after he has been told in no uncertain terms that he. is not. wanted. Eridan is also a master of selective hearing. Act nice to him? You must be harboring secret flushed feelings. Get snappish and insult him? Secretly, you have a hate boner for him. And nothing will convince him otherwise.

Also, despite his flirting with everyone, he is still extremely desperate to convince Feferi to be in a relationship with him once more. To this end, he gets into fights with who he perceives (rightly so) as his main rival for her affections, in a bid to convince Feferi that if she won't be his matesprit then she should auspistice between himself and Sollux (said rival). He's desperate enough that even though his goal is for Feferi to be flushed for him, he'd accept ashen feelings.

Further proof of his whinginess is that, despite his rather tough façade, when push comes to shove he has a tendency to crumble. This is exhibited numerous times. First is when Feferi breaks up with him, he panics and begs her not to. Then he tries to get in contact with Karkat to complain about being broken up with, he can't get a response. When he bothers Gamzee to find out what's going on, and he finds out that Karkat is inadvertently responsible for Sollux's death and is very broken up about it, he immediately backs down and admits to being an asshole. Another prime example is whenever he talks about fighting on his planet in the game, because his usual bravado quickly becomes complaining about how it was lonely and difficult and no one came to help him or even talked to him.

Now, melodramatics. Part of this is that he adores tales of history, particularly military leaders and conquest and glorious victory. This lends to him acting in a rather theatrical manner, attempting to mimic the tales he reads of. Coupled with cultural attitudes concerning biology, and he has a rather massive ego (which then feeds back into his whingy desperation, because of course he's the best and who wouldn't want to be with him).

He tends to exhibit his emotions in a rather overdone fashion. Negative emotions such as sadness, disappointment, upset all lead to complaining and begging. Annoyance or aggravation lead to posturing, ranting, and also complaining and begging. Given most of his emotions exhibited fall into the negative side, he tends to be complaining a LOT. Because he is often faced with rejection, accept him at your own risk. He can be very clingy; after being Feferi's moirail for an unspecified length of time, he cannot accept that she is no longer interested in him in any fashion.

However, despite his rather annoying personality, he is really quite guileless in certain ways. His attempts at being sneaky are really quite transparent. Becauses he believes there's no reason someone wouldn't want to be with him, coupled with his persistent belief that everyone is interested, means he likely wouldn't be aware if someone were to manipulate him by using his feelings against him.

Powers: Being able to breathe underwater, though that's more a function of biology (seadweller; has gills) than any sort of supernatural power.

He has a very high powered energy rifle known as Ahab's Crosshairs. And by very high powered we mean, "Holy shit, who let the 13 year old kid use something capable of killing a creature many times his size in one shot?!".

He also has the ability to use what is termed "white magic science". Canon never quite elaborates on how it works, but it is essentially the ability to create a focused beam of energy and use it to attack people with. He believes this requires use of a wand. This is actually more powerful than the aforementioned energy rifle, considering when he dueled Sollux with the rifle, it ended in a draw, but using white magic he managed to overcome Sollux's powers and knock the other troll out. Obviously, this is pretty deadly and should be taken away, outside of events.

He is in possession of a Sylladex, which is the name given for the inventory system used in Homestuck. How it works is that inventoried items are "Captchalogued", or put onto a card that shows a picture of the item on the front, with a code representing the item on the back. This code can then be used to duplicate the item. His Fetch Modus (the way he puts things into and gets things out of the Sylladex) is unspecified. The other half of the Sylladex is the Strife Specibus, which determines the weapons a character uses in a fight. His Specibi are Riflekind and Wandkind, corresponding to his two main weapons. This will not be coming with him, but should make a nice regain.

Appearance: Basic appearance using the sprite style artwork in canon.

For those of you wanting a more detailed style. Oh yes, he wears a lot of bling. So much bling. It's 'cause he's royalty.

Suitability/eligibility: Aside from the fact that in his canon he was playing a game that can and has resulted in the death of players due to the fact that one has to fight enemies that grow increasingly more powerful, up to and including near gods? Trolls are, from 'birth', raised to be very tough and self-sufficient. Live-action roleplay on the troll homeworld actually involves killing the opposing players, he's spent much of his life killing the lusus (parent/guardian creature for young trolls) of other trolls to feed an eldritch abomination (that happens to be another troll's lusus), and has managed to survive the destruction of his homeworld and annihilation of his race.

The three magic words are: youth, fountain, eternal

Third-Person Sample:
It's disgusting, absolutely disgusting, he thinks as he picks up yet another bottle from the sands outside his home. This one is half full of liquid, likely soda, though he can no longer tell given how the sea has bleached the label white and the contents have thickened, mold beginning to grow on the surface in a thick, fuzzy skin. He scowls, holding the garbage at arms length as he carries it to be incinerated with his own trash. "Fuckin' landdwwellers, jus' thinkin' they can toss their trash wwherewer they wwant."

The nightly duty of policing his land done, he scrubs his hands clean of the filth left behind by touching that trash. Then it's off to saddle his lusus. Gl'bgolyb won't tolerate not being fed for long, and while he'd like nothing more than to let the monstrous creature starve until it whimpers for food, its cries sending psychic shockwaves to kill the lowbloods... He couldn't do that to Fef. He knows if he slacks in his duties, she'd go hunting herself, and he just can't stand thinking about how she'd look if she had to hunt once more. Besides, if he didn't help her keep Gl'bgolyb quiet, then maybe she'd never consider being flushed for him, and that would be one of the worst things he could ever imagine.

When he takes to the skies, it's with a specific destination in mind. He's seen a pod of skywhale lusus about an hour's flight south of his home, and he's reasonably certain that these have yet to chose a troll to raise. A few of those would be enough to keep Gl'bgolyb quiet for several nights, and he wouldn't even have to lie to Fef if she asked how many trolls were orphaned and he said 'None'. An almost perfect win-win situation if he ever heard one. The only way it could be better is if Gl'bgolyb could be convinced to speak for reasons other than hunger, reasons he'd have no control over...

Ah! Thar she blows!

First-Person Sample:
[When the feed starts, Eridan appears dripping wet and pissed off at the world.]

All right. WWho's the wwise guy that thought it wwould be glubbin funny to put chlorine in the wwater?! It's bad enough this place only has showwers an not bathtubs, but makin' it so I can't swwim at all is...

It's...

It's fuckin' unconscionable is wwhat it is!

[He sets the communicator down, in the process showing a quick glimpse of the gills along his neck and sides, which are bright purple from being irritated by the chemicals. As he storms over to the shower by the pool to rinse the chlorine off, his sneakers make wet squishing and squeaking noises. Even over the sound of running water, his whinging can be heard.]

I wwon't let them get awway wwith treatin' me like this! The food isn't ewen fit to be called that. It's insultin' to be forced inta makin' crafts like some kind a schoolfeedin' wwriggler in the name a useless therguppy. An' yet, I can be fuckin' magnaminnowws as to deal wwith that. But denyin' me my rights as a seadwweller to swwim?

As soon as I get my wweapons back, I'm gonna find the person in charge an' make. Them. PAY.

Anything else? It's canon that Eridan's typing style is actually a reflection of his accent. Even he admits that it's a weird accent in one log. Prior to the deletion of his formspring account the creator also mentioned that he would pronounce v's like they were w's. Now, there is no set canon for how w's would be pronounced, but likely the sound would also be doubled. (Since in certain languages, a w is called a "double v", and the sound given his doubled v's is that ascribed to w. Thus, somehow the w sound would be doubled. Most likely this fluctuates based on word, and would make his speech incomprehensible if typed out phonetically.)

He also uses maritime based puns. Not to the extent Feferi does, but. I will do my best to not use anything that's too obscure or a huge stretch, but I make no promises. I can do some pretty codawful fins with puns.

Anyhow, all of that is just a really drawn out way of me explaining his speech in the samples, and that if such speech translations are ever needed, just poke me.

Also, come to think of it, can we maybe just pretend that there's some fancy futuristic non-chemical way to keep the pool clean? Because while writing that for my sample was fun, I think we'll have a very cranky seadweller if he can't get any water time. After all, even if he's shown living above water in canon, he still lives surrounded by water.
